Jakarta, Xweb.biz.id – Over 10,000 Buddhists came together on Saturday at the Si Mian Fo Temple in Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK), Jakarta, to greet Bhante Thudong and his group of 38 monks on a profound 2,500-kilometer spiritual journey from Thailand to Indonesia. This extraordinary journey, known as the Thudong pilgrimage, is a path of simplicity, endurance, and deep devotion, culminating in the Vesak celebration at Borobudur Temple in Central Java on May 15.

The Thudong pilgrimage spans multiple countries—Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore—and now Indonesia, with each stop along the way representing a moment for reflection and prayer. Their arrival at Si Mian Fo Temple marks a significant chapter in their journey before the monks make their way to Borobudur, one of Buddhism’s most sacred sites, to celebrate Vesak, a day honoring the birth, enlightenment, and death of Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha.

A Moment of Unity Across Faiths

The welcoming ceremony at Si Mian Fo Temple was a powerful display of interfaith unity. Buddhist devotees, Islamic boarding school students (santri), and members of the Tridharma community came together to unfurl a massive 780-meter-long Indonesian flag. This act, coordinated by the diverse groups, was more than just a patriotic gesture; it symbolized the strength of religious tolerance and cooperation in Indonesia.

“We raised the red-and-white flag shoulder to shoulder—santri, Buddhists, and Tridharma followers—standing as one to represent unity and harmony in Indonesia. That’s the mission of these Thudong monks as well. They are spreading a message of peace and unity across the world,” said Soegiandi, Chairman of the Si Mian Fo Foundation, during the ceremony.

Pindapatta: A Meaningful Tradition of Giving

The monks were also honored with pindapatta, a traditional Buddhist alms-giving ceremony in which devotees offer food and drinks to the monks. The significance of this ritual extends beyond the spiritual, as the food and offerings collected will be distributed to the needy, highlighting the social dimensions of the event. This practice embodies the Buddhist principles of charity, compassion, and the shared responsibility to care for others.

A Pilgrimage of Peace and Spiritual Reflection

For the Thudong monks, the journey is not only one of physical distance but also a spiritual odyssey that deepens their commitment to simplicity, mindfulness, and the pursuit of peace. Their travels across Southeast Asia are not simply about reaching a destination but embodying the Buddhist teachings along the way.

The grand culmination of this journey will take place at Borobudur Temple, where thousands of Buddhists will come together for the pinnacle of the Vesak celebrations. The occasion will be marked by prayers, meditations, and shared hopes for global peace and spiritual enlightenment.

A Testament to Religious Harmony and the Pursuit of Peace

Bhante Thudong’s pilgrimage is more than just a religious journey; it’s a symbol of the power of interfaith dialogue and peaceful coexistence. It serves as a reminder that despite our differences, we can find common ground in our shared values of compassion, respect, and mutual understanding. The unity shown at the Si Mian Fo Temple proves that peace is not only possible but can thrive through collaboration and shared purpose.

This journey, culminating at one of the world’s most iconic Buddhist landmarks, is a living testament to the fact that peace isn’t just an ideal but something that can be actively cultivated through acts of kindness, humility, and unity—an inspiring message in today’s complex world.
